Deluxe Title Description
Chemistry of Life Students study the role of enzymes, learn what will harm enzymes, and determine the effect a lack of enzymes will have on body functions.
The Microscope Students review the microscope and practice different slide preparation techniques.
Cells Students grow a protozoa sample, learn various staining techniques, view protozoa, and attempt to identify which type of protozoa they have grown.
Photosynthesis Students learn chemical techniques used to test for oxygen and carbon dioxide.  This information is then used to experiment with a live plant to view the effects of photosynthesis.
Mitosis Students prepare a slide in order to view the various stages of cell division.
Hybrids Students study basic genetics and grow albino tobacco seeds to see results of an actual genetic cross.
Genetics Students will study various inherited human characteristics to determine which are dominant.  Taste test papers included.
Classification Students will learn proper surveying techniques and develop their own system of classification.
Bacteria Students will learn one technique for culturing bacteria.  Two types of bacteria will grow during the week for use in later labs.
Microscopic Life Students will learn how scientists test various antibiotics on bacteria using the bacteria cultures from lab 10.  Students will also learn the anatomy of a protozoa.
Algae Students will view the results of lab 11 to learn which antibiotic was most effective against each type of bacteria.  Students will student algae and view prepared slides of different types of algae.
Fungi Students will grow fungi in order to view it with the microscope.  Students will learn the major classes of fungi.
Lower Plants Students will learn about the "lower plants" such as mosses and ferns.  Students will study and view various types of plants cells from samples they have collected.
Monocot & Dicot Students will learn to identify plants as monocots or dicots and identify various plant and seed parts.  Students will perform a chromatography lab using a mixed dye and a chlorophyll sample.
Seeds & Fruits Students will test seeds for the presence of sugar and starch and compare the results with those taken after the seeds are boiled.  Students will perform a lab to determine which parts of a seed are essential to germination.
Worms Students view and study planaria and vinegar eels.  Students will also perform regeneration experiments of the planaria.
Worm Dissection Students will dissect an earthworm in order to learn its anatomy and review basic dissection techniques.
Crayfish & Grasshopper Students will study crustacea and insecta by means of dissection.
Mollusks Students will dissect a squid and learn how its unique anatomy aids it as a predator and prey.
Fish Dissection Students will learn the anatomy of a perch by means of dissection.
Mud Puppy Dissection Students will study amphibians by dissecting a salamander.  (The lab includes a large number of optional items students should identify if they intend to have a premed or related major in college.)
Fetal Pig Dissection Students will dissect and study a mammal.  (The lab includes a large number of optional items students should identify if they intend to have a premed or related major in college.)
Owl Pellet Dissection Students will dissect an owl pellet and attempt to reconstruct the skeletal remains of the owl's last meal.
Ecology Students will perform various water quality tests on water samples from different locations.
Blood Vessels Students will study blood vessels in a live fish.  They will also study the effects of alcohol and nicotine on the blood vessels.
Respiration Students will test lung volume using the lung volume bag and experiment with the effect of exercise on carbon dioxide production.
Vitamin C Students will determine the concentration of Vitamin C in various foods and test to see if cooking reduces the quantity of Vitamin C.
Blood Types Students will study blood and blood types as well as perform a test to determine their own blood types.
Senses Students will perform a number of experiments using various stimuli to test different senses.
Aspirin Students will extract a sample from different tree barks to try to find a natural source of the primary ingredient in aspirin.
