Syllabus

Deluxe Title Description
Fossils II Use tools to "excavate" fossils from plaster of Paris.
Water:  Distillation & Waves Add food coloring and salt to water and then remove them by the process of distillation.
Oceans Experiment to study buoyancy of salt water compared to ocean water.  Perform graphing exercises to illustrate relative sizes used in oceanography.
Moisture in the Air Perform various experiments to show humidity, produce a cloud, and watch condensation.
Aviation:  Newton's First & Second Law of Motion Build gliders to learn to follow instructions and study Newton's laws of motion
Electrochemistry Build and test a Volta pile (an early battery) and a potato battery.
The Sun I Build a sundial.  Learn that we see sun before it clears the horizon due to refraction. Perform refraction experiment using cup of water.
The Sun II Students use iron filings to see magnetic field.  Compare size of the sun with all of the planets and the distance of planets to the sun.
Energy Dissolve sodium thiosulfate and reform crystals (end/exothermic reaction). Students shake (fast/slow) Styrofoam cup with sand and record and graph the temperature.
Heat I Make a convection machine from candle and paper spiral. Use candle and wax coated splint to show heat is given off near the flame. Heat up metal wire (red hot) to see radiated heat. Test thermal insulation properties of materials using ice cube.
Heat II Put alcohol in a jar to observe evaporating alcohol makes things cooler. Put drop of water in foil and heat it up to see foil expand due to water. Use test tube, stopper, tubing to show hot gas expands. Pop kernel of corn in test tube.
The Mind:  Nervous System Students try to write upside down and backwards using a mirror.  Test sensitivity (nerves) of various parts of the body using a toothpick.
Plant Reproduction II View pollen under a microscope. Dissect a flower and plant a flower from seeds.
Plant Reproduction III Use microscope to view root tips. Propagate 3 different plants from cuttings.
